Answers to Common Questions About Sleep and Autism
How can I help my child with sleep and Autism?
There is a common misconception that children with autism and ADHD don’t need as much sleep as neurotypical children. And you may even have been told to never expect good sleep for your child. This doesn’t have to be the case. Using my gentle, responsive methods, we can work together to support your child to sleep well. It may require patience and time, but your little one has the ability to get a good night’s sleep.
Can you sleep train an autistic child?
When working with autistic children, I am very aware that anxieties, triggers and sensory needs mean more traditional sleep training methods will not be effective (even some of the most gentle ones). This doesn’t mean that you can’t sleep train an autistic child. It simply means the techniques are different, applied more gradually and more patience is required. With autistic children we want to avoid any triggers, overwhelm or upset.
Why do kids with autism struggle to sleep?
Children with autism may struggle with their sleep for a number of reasons. These include anxieties, especially separation anxiety, overstimulation which makes it harder for them to relax and wind-down, sensory overload and irregular melatonin production. All of this can make it harder for children with autism to sleep well, but if addressed, these issues don’t have to stop your child from getting a good night’s sleep in the long run.
How do kids with autism sleep?
Children with autism sleep in the same way as neurotypical children. They go in and out of sleep cycles throughout the night. However, children with autism may experience irregular melatonin production, which simply means the sleepy hormone that helps us get to sleep, can be more up and down in children with autism. This means they may struggle to get to sleep at night, and may wake more during the night.
At what age do sleep and autism problems occur?
Children’s sleep can be affected from a young age, but it’s not always possible to diagnose children with autism until they are slightly older. You may see signs in your child that make you strongly suspect autism, but they are too young for a diagnosis or you may just be waiting for results. Even if you don’t have a formal diagnosis, I will work with you using the same methods and techniques as I would for a diagnosed child. As the parent, your instincts will be listened to and respected and I will support you with the most suitable plan for your individual child.
Working with Amy allowed us to support Olivia to gradually learn the skills to self-settle to sleep. Her nighttime routine quickly changed and she started falling asleep independently and napping in the day.
It's made such a difference to Olivia's behaviour. It also means we now have some grown-up time in the evenings. It's definitely made a real positive difference to our little family. Thank you Amy!
